How long does it take for the carpet to dry?

Typical dry times range from 2-12 hrs. Drying times vary greatly depending on a number of conditions, things such as carpet fiber, the indoor environment, and the soil level of the carpet can all contribute to the speed of drying. Synthetic fibers such as nylon and polypropylene will dry faster than a natural fiber such as wool.

What can I do to help the carpet to dry more quickly?

There are several things that you can do, Here a few ideas:
• Control the environment: This is probably the most important thing you can do, if it’s winter turn up the heat, in the summer turn up the A/C. Both of these adjustments will help to reduce the humidity in the house and help to dry the carpet much faster. Another option is to open the windows, however you must first consider the outside conditions before deciding on this route. If it’s raining or otherwise damp outside opening the windows may actually prolong the drying time.
• Turn on the fans: Chances are you probably have a bunch of fans you could use to help dry out the carpet. Ceiling fans, box fans, utility fans, ventilation fans, all of them help get the job done faster. It’s important to only turn the fans on after the carpet has been cleaned as fans running while the carpet is being cleaned can actually be counter productive since it drys out the pre-spray cleaners and makes them ineffective. Please feel free to request our technicians to help by turning on the ceiling fans as they finish cleaning out of a room.
• Have your carpet cleaned regularly: It stands to reason that the dirtier the carpet is the more water will be required to clean it and the longer it will take to dry. We can help with this by putting you on a regular schedule and reminding you when your carpets are due to be cleaned.

Will my carpet get dirty more quickly after it is cleaned?

If it is cleaned and treated properly it shouldn’t. It used to be that once a carpet was cleaned it would re-soil very quickly because the chemicals used would leave behind residues that would actually help to attract dirt into the fibers. With modern chemistry much of this problem has been addressed since the pre-spray cleaners used now are designed to leave behind very little residue. Another thing to consider is that as the carpet ages the fabric protector and stain guard that is applied at the factory deteriorates which allows dirt and stains to penetrate the fiber more quickly. The use of a clean fiber rinse agent like Fab-Set™, and the reapplication of a quality fabric protector such as Maxim Advanced™ will help to prevent staining and re-soiling.

How often should I get my carpet cleaned?

A lot depends on how much traffic and soiling your carpet gets. The recommended schedule as outlined by Shaw Floors is between 12-18 months for average traffic and soiling. There are some things that you can do to keep your carpets looking their best between cleanings.
• Frequent vacuuming is probably the single most important thing you can do to help keep your carpets clean and your indoor environment healthy. It’s important to make sure your vacuum is maintained properly with the bag, belts and hoses checked regularly to ensure proper operation. it’s important to replace your vacuum bag before it becomes completely full, it should be replaced when it’s around 1/2 to 3/4 full. Listen to how the vacuum sounds while using it and make sure to check for clogs and or broken belts if anything sounds abnormal.
• If possible try not to wear dirty shoes in the house. This may sound like a no brainer, but the fact is if everybody is wearing dirty shoes around the house it makes it really hard to keep the carpet clean for long no matter how often it’s vacuumed or professionally cleaned. Having a door mat at every entrance door can help to prevent dirt from coming into the house and onto the carpet. Make sure to clean the mats regularly to keep them from becoming part of the problem. (Highland Pro Clean offers door mat cleaning at no extra charge upon request)
• Clean the other floors in the house on a regular basis. Tile, wood, laminate and linoleum floors should be cleaned often to help prevent the carpet re-soiling. The dirt and grease from these types of flooring can very easily be transferred to the carpet especially in doorways and transition areas between kitchens and bathrooms.

What should I use if I spill something on my carpet?

If the spill is fresh and still wet we recommend using a dry rag with weighted pressure applied to the area to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Next a clean damp rag with a little dish detergent can be used on the area, again using pressure and a blotting motion, try to avoid rubbing as this can cause pile distortion and fraying of the carpet yarns. You may need to repeat this step until the area comes clean of the spill. Rinse the area with a rag and plain water. Finally you should use a clean dry rag with pressure to extract as much of the moisture as possible. That’s it! if the spot reappears use a high quality professional spotter such as Avenge™ on the area (Highland Pro Clean offers Free bottles of Avenge™ spotter to all of our Gold and Platinum customers. Please do yourself a favor and DO NOT use products such as Resolve or Oxi Clean as these products can leave heavy residue and cause discoloration). If the spot still doesn’t go away please call us here at Highland Pro Clean and we can schedule a service appointment to come clean and treat the area with specialized spotters and equipment.

Can you get pet urine out of carpet?

YES WE CAN! There’s a lot of things to examine and consider that determine the effectiveness of the treatment. Here are a few:
• Identifying all the areas of the carpet where urine is present can be difficult. Highland Pro Clean uses special UV lights to help identify areas where urine may be present, but the effectiveness of these lights can be hit or miss. The best way to identify where the problem areas are is to observe your pet and see where they are likely to have a accident.
• The frequency and type of accident will affect the result of the treatment. If your pet only occasionally has a little accident it’s possible the urine spot is contained to the carpet only, however most of the time the amount of urine is enough to penetrate down into the pad and sometimes the subfloor itself. If it can be determined that the only the carpet and pad is involved we can soak the area with a enzymatic cleaning solution and then extract the carpet and pad with a tool called the Water Claw. A enzyme post treatment can then be applied which will continue working to dissolve and deodorize the area until the area is dry. If the urine has gone down into the subfloor it may be necessary to lay the carpet back and clean and seal the subfloor itself. In this case the area of affected pad can be removed and replaced with a pet-proof pad and the carpet cleaned and treated on both sides to ensure a thorough solution.

Why don’t the traffic areas ever look clean?

This can of course be caused by a poor quality job, but if the job was done properly according to Clean Trust Standards the problem is usually caused because of either pile distortion or fiber abrasion.
• Pile distortion is caused by repeated traffic over a area and is usually seen most often on Polypropylene or Olefin carpets. Over time the carpet fiber basically losses its definition and lays down never to get up again. This causes the carpet to look darker in the traffic areas. You can often identify pile distortion because the carpet will look dark when viewed from one angle and light when viewed from the opposite direction.
• Carpet Fiber Abrasion is caused by dry particulate soil rubbing on the individual fibers of the carpet giving the carpet a dull or dark appearance. Think of a car who’s nice glossy paint has become faded and damaged because of years of dirt and weather scratching the surface. In the example of the car you can prevent surface damage by regularly cleaning and applying wax to the finish. Taking care of your carpet isn’t much different, you can prevent fiber abrasion through routine vacuuming, regularly scheduled cleaning and the application of a carpet fiber protector.
